EVERYONE HAS A SONG INSIDE THEM SO THEY SAY, WRITING THE SONGS IN ITSELF CAN BE A BIT OF A HEADACHE, BUT TRYING TO GET THEM RECORDED, JUST TO THE DEMO STAGE CAN BE A NIGHTMARE, WHEN YOU REACH THE STAGE OF GOING INTO A STUDIO TO PUT YOUR SONG DOWN TO DISC, THATS WHEN YOU NEED A FAT CHEQUE BOOK,,, STUDIO TIME, MUSICIANS, SOUND ENGINEER, EVEN TEA AND COFFEE HAVE TO BE PAID FOR, THAT,S WHY NOT MANY PEOPLE BOTHER. I HAVE BEEB IN STUDIO,S WHERE I HAVE PAID A LOT, AND I MEAN A LOT OF MONEY JUST BY THE HOUR. SO I DECIDED TO SET UP MY OWN JUST FOR MY SONGWRITING.
THE MAIN BIT OF KIT IS A 16 TRACK YAMAHA AW16G DIGITAL RECORDER, I BOUGHT THIS WHEN THEY FIRST CAME ON THE SCENE, AND ALTHOUGH THEY WERE EXPENSIVE BACK THEN, THEY ARE BRILLIANT, I RUN THIS THROUGH A SONY FLAT RESPONSE AMP, WITH A PAIR OF SPIRIT ABSOLUTE 2 NEAR FIELD MONITORS, I USE A SYSTEM CALLED BAND IN A BOX FROM CANADA, ALONG WITH CAKEWALK, MIDIED THROUGH A PC TO A GEM S2 MUSIC PROCESSER KEYBOARD, FOR MICROPHONES I USE AKG C1000S, TO MY MIND THE BEST ALL ROUND STUDIO MICS.
THATS THE TECHI BIT OVER....
AFTER YOU HAVE WROTE AND RECORDED YOUR MASTERPIECE, YOU THEN HAVE TO GET PEOPLE TO HEAR IT, BACK A FEW YEARS AGO PEOPLE IN THE CLUBS WOULD SIT AND LISTEN TO NEW SONGS, NOW UNFORTUNATELY, NEW SONGS ARE LOST, A LOT OF THE TIME BECAUSE PEOPLE ONLY WANT TO HEAR A BEAT, CONTREVERSIAL I KNOW, BUT TRUE ALL THE SAME, MOST TIMES ARTISTS, IF THEY WRITE SONGS AT ALL, WILL PUT ONE OR TWO ON THEIR NEW ALBUMS, AND HOPEFULLY THEIR FANS WILL BUY THEM AT GIGS AND GET TO HEAR NEW MATERIAL. I KNOW THAT PEOPLE LIKE FROGGIE WRITE THEIR OWN SONG,S ,BUT CAN YOU GO INTO SMITHS AND BUY A FROGGIE ALBUM OFF THE SHELF, HOW ABOUT WRITERS LIKE STU PAGE, A SUPERB MUSICIAN AND WRITER, BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE TODAY KNOW OF HIM, AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW THE SONGS OF, TOM T HALL, OR HARLON HOWARD, WHO FAMOUSLY SAID, ALL YOU NEED FOR A GOOD SONG IS THREE CHORDS AND THE TRUTH. THE SONGS CAN BE SENT TO MUSIC PUBLISHERS, OR RECORD COMPANIES, BUT, IN THE UK THEY DO NOT WANT TO KNOW BRITISH COUNTRY MUSIC, OR EVEN TO SOME EXTENT IRISH COUNTRY MUSIC, FOR THEM THERE IS NO MONEY IN IT. THE MOST PLACES YOU WILL FIND OUR KIND OF MUSIC IS MARKET STALLS. ALL I AM SAYING IS THAT TO BE A BUDDING COUNTRY SONGWRITER IN THE UK, IS LIKE CLIMBING EVEREST WITH YOUR FEET TIED TOGETHER , DONT TAKE MY WORD, ASK ANY OF THE COUNTRY ACTS THAT VISIT YOUR CLUB AND THEY WILL SAY THE SAME. IN SAYING THAT, IT CAN BE VERY SATISFYING TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEA,S ON CD AND PLAYING ON YOUR STEREO SYSTEM. HERE ARE SOME OF MY OWN SONGS, THEY ARE IN DEMO MODE ( LAID DOWN AS A DEMO, NOT THE FINISHED PIECE)
2... LORD KNOWS IVE TRIED... This song although not in the general mode of Country Music, still has a place in my song list. this one was recorded on a Fostex FD8 digital recorder , once again a few years back, I was feeling pretty low at the time, and although it may not stand out as a good song to the listener, it holds special memories for me, and after all is,nt that what songwriting is all about, because at the end of the day, someone, somewhere, will relate to this song, even in it,s very basic form.
CAVALRY BLUE,,,This one was wrote after watching a programe on the Discovery channel, about the storm chasers in the mid west of America. When the storm begins the sky turns dark blue, and with the wind and rain ect, it is easy to think of another huge battle taking place in the heavens.
So there you have three very basic songs, taken from what I call my musical notepad (library) I have put them on this page to show that not all songs start out as masterpieces of verse, even the most bueatifull of diamonds start life as an old chunk of coal..... I may even get around to finishing them one day. (All songs copyright Terry Maher)
